Con Air Viewing Party

As some of you (hopefully all of you) know, Elephant Larry's spring show will be entirely about the 1997 Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster "Con Air" which occupies a very special place in Elephant Larry's heart. Meaning that we've all seen it about 15 times or so. But you probably haven't!

So to rectify this problem, we're throwing a Con Air Viewing Party, this Saturday at my (Stefan's) house. There will two limited edition Con Air posters for the first fifty guests, plus we will be serving prison wine. Yum!

Don impersonators make me sad.

The announcer for this movie trailer does not have an easy job. The dialogue he was given to read is awful and it seems to spoil the entire plot of the film. But he gets through it as best he can...

...until the end. It sucks for him that his last sentence ends on the words "sleep dealer" and then he has to say "sleep dealer" one more time right after that. But boy oh boy, that last "sleep dealer" is not good. He almost sounds like he's announcing the name of a romantic comedy or dog movie.

I've enjoyed the trailers I've seen for this Summer's movies. Wolverine looks big and stupid and fun. I've really enjoyed the Star Trek trailers, and love the concept of the movie. Up is, I've been told, a documentary about me when I'm an old man, but with my current personality.

But none of them have given me that jump-up-in-your-seat, giddy, "I want to watch this again right now," thrill that the above trailer did.

I didn't realize the real Sam Raimi had gone anywhere, until we got him back.

Coffee and Fish

Maybe this isn't normal.

I've been eating tuna salad for lunch and dinner all week long (that's not the part I'm worried about), and I'm finding that I have a strong craving for coffee to go with my tuna fish. A really strong craving. It's so delicious.

Now, I understand why I might have an associative, nostalgia-based connection between these two foods. Many of my earlier tuna salad experiences involve bagels, and bagels pair well with coffee. But there's no reason to assume this connection should work without the bagel in between. It just works on its own; coffee and fish and mayonnaise taste good together. Somehow.

This isn't how things are supposed to be. I know it sounds gross on paper, but try it before drawing any conclusions. Or perhaps you already have and you agree with me, and this actually is normal after all. Perhaps.

NYU Students Protest Nothing/Everything

Okay, so I'm a little out of it, and we're three days in, but this story is hilarious. For those of you who have link-a-phobia, a growing group of NYU students have barricaded themselves in the cafeteria of the Kimmel Student Center for the past three days, essentially to lobby for financial disclosure from the University.

Except... That's not it. They're also lobbying for Palestinian liberation. And also some other stuff. And some of them are unsure what the protest is. So basically, they're protesting everything, and nothing at the same time. Which is, take it from someone who worked at NYU for four years, the most NYU thing that has ever happened.

Now, I don't know exactly what's going on in there, but I have to imagine it goes... A little something... Like... This:

[Protestors are milling around in the Kimmel Center cafeteria, holding signs protesting everything from student housing, to abortion rights.]

LEAD PROTESTOR: What do we want?

PROTESTORS: SOMETHING!

LEAD PROTESTOR: When do we want it?

PROTESTOR: WHENEVER!

NEW PROTESTOR: (Out of breath) Hey, the police barricade outside is growing, but I managed to get through.

LEAD: Well, welcome to join the fight, brother. What are you here for?

NEW: Aren't we protesting for financial disclosure?

LEAD: Well, Bob is.

BOB: I'm really into that junk.

NEW: Wait, but no one else is?

LEAD: I don't know... Anyone else here protesting for financial disclosure?

JANICE: I'm protesting AGAINST financial disclosure.

BOB: What? We should know where our money is going.

JANICE: ...And I think we shouldn't know where our money is going!

[JANICE and BOB start to yell at each other.]

LEAD: Okay, calm down. Yelling never solved anything.

NEW: Are you serious? All you guys are doing is yelling.

NICK: Hey, you leave him alone, or I'll protest YOU.

NEW: Go ahead. This is so typical... You finally get some press for an important issue, and you guys blow it by having no clear focus. I mean, what's this guy protesting, he's like fifty.

NOAH: (He's kind of dirty, with a scratchy white beard) I 'm not protestin' nuthin'. I live here in the cafeteria.

NEW: Well, at least that makes sense.

LEAD: Listen, guy. You get out of here, or I'm going to protest my fists in your face.

NEW: You're going to object to the idea that your fists should be in my face?

LEAD: I... Uh...

NEW: Forget it. I'm out of here... Maybe I'll go get annoyingly drunk at a bar on Fourth Street, even though I'm underage.

[NEW leaves. Pause.]

LEAD: What do we want?

PROTESTORS: WE DON'T KNOW!

LEAD PROTESTOR: When do we want it?

PROTESTOR: WHAT?

I'm obsessed with cooking. I love seafood. I butcher my own fish all the time. There's nothing remotely gross about the sight of a whole, deceased fish to me.

But is this seafood display really necessary? (I've hidden this in a link rather than embedded it so as to not subject the unwilling. Buyer beware.)

FYI, I snapped this picture at the Whole Foods where they shot Top Chef this season. Thanks to Bravo for choosing not to include footage of this kinda crap. I sometimes eat while watching Top Chef.

So I know that this isn't a political blog of any sort or stripe, but there's something weird to me about how the GOP uses humor. There's this smug, assholish vibe about it all, like it can't get over how funny it is.

That certainly extends to this official RNC Valentine's Day effort, GOPValentine.com. It's certainly not helped by the amateurish photoshopping, the oversized font, and varying levels of attempts at "humor." Take, for example, this valentine, where the word "meet" is recast in a romantic context, which is totally reasonable:

But then there's this one, which assumes some sort of Obama-Guantanamo link, as if he invented the place:

Even if he had created Gitmo, there's really no effort being made here, just putting "romantic" and "Guantanamo" in the same sentence. At least say "I'd like to indefinitely detain you" or something.

Never Stop Eating

Tomorrow morning, for the first time since, oh, I don't know, 1983 or something, I'm having a routine* physical done. In order to do that, I was told I need to fast, but promptly forgot when that was supposed to start. Then, when I got on the phone with the doctor's office, I completely blanked on the word "fast." Scrambling to say something, the way I asked was:

"When do I have to stop eating?"

Which of course implies that I will never, ever stop eating, right up until that moment. And that I will only do so with much regret, because I'd really prefer to never stop eating food.

The funnier part about this is, it's pretty much true. If I could just keep stuffing food down my gullet, I would.

Anyway, Midnight is when I need to start fasting, in case anyone is out with me at the Cheesecake Factory.

*I like using the word routine here, because it implies something that is done a regular basis, which this clearly is not.

Rescued!

Last night, at about 12:15, my lady called me on the way over to my apartment. She told me she had been stopped on the street by a weird woman who was trying to rescue a runaway possum. I told her I'd meet her on the street to lend a hand. Hey. I'd never seen a possum.

Turns out they are gross, cute, docile and scary all at once. Gross tail. Cute white face! Gross misshapen nose. Cute beady eyes! Scary mouth that opens too wide. Fluffy bean-shaped body! Kind and quiet. But might be rabid!

When I arrived at the scene, Catherine was holding a large towel and the weird woman was walking around the possum, saying "hi" over and over again in an incredibly creepy, annoying manner that reminded me of the girl in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which you should totally see). Thankfully, there was some small reason for the "hi"-ing; she was trying to distract the little critter while Catherine pounced on it, wrapped it in the towel and tossed her into a large cage that the woman happened to have in her apartment. It must be said: Catherine's possum-catching abilities were a wonder to behold. She got that possum in that cage on the first try, and with such grace that the possum wasn't even frightened.

With the calm, happy possum sitting plumply in its cage, my fear of rabies was swiftly replaced by my fear of Park Slope hippies. The weird woman had that big cage ready to go because she rescues animals constantly. The number of rescue stories she spouted led us to believe that maybe not all these animals were in need of rescue; it's not like I walk by runaway animals every day and ignore them. How does she find them all? Plus, she complained that her landlord always tries to evict her when she tries to take in wild animals and that he probably wouldn't let her keep a possum. Also, she runs a business where she goes around saying hi to people's animals or something (trust me, this is not much of a simplification).

Without needlessly trashing her any further here, I'll sum up by saying that, as we helped her carry the cage up to Prospect Park (apparently a second-best to letting her keep a possum in her apartment), we almost regretted helping her save the little furry bean. It generated a strange cognitive dissonance to help someone do a good deed and be really pissed off at them at the same time.

Any, we helped a creepy idiot save a possum! And when we opened the cage in the park, it scampered around and it was totally adorable. THE END.

Lots of fun facts are thrown out during an episode of Iron Chef America, but the best one I've ever heard was in a rerun of "Battle Chocolate and Coconut" that I saw last night (2 simultaneous secret ingredients, sacrilegious), where Alton Brown mentioned that coconut water is sterile and was actually used as an intravenous solution in World War II. Apparently, it continues to be used where hospitals cannot afford saline but there are lots of coconuts.

I have to remember to request a coconut IV bag next time I'm hospitalized. I think I'm willing to pay a few extra bucks.

I'm pretty excited. In just about two days, I'll be down in Walt Disney World with Biz, my wife, and Elephant Larry friend Baz from Chicago (another Disney theme park enthusiast). We're going to walk into our hotel room at the Polynesian Resort, switch on the TV, and be greeted with THIS:

Notable: at 3:00 she claims that Animal Kingdom's Africa is "a lot like the real Africa, but without all the malaria shots and stuff." Yes, but plus all kinds of families entirely dressed in oversized tank tops.

I don't expect many of you to make it all the way through, though you should get a taste of it. As Biz says, this girl is the definition of "too much." And it's true. She is the living embodiment of what it's like to be at a drama party at 2 in the morning, where there are only shrieky girls left who just want to put on Madonna's Immaculate Collection and DANCE. And though this is a strung together clips version of the Top 7 Things to See at Walt Disney World Hosted By Stacy Aswad, the whole thing is just about this hyper.

Won't stop us from watching it at least twice, but holy cow.

I remember seeing Porcupine Racetrack for the first time as a teenager. Not laughing, just watching intently, all the time thinking, 'This might be the funniest, most wonderful thing I have ever seen'. The State performed it this weekend as an encore to their reunion show at the SF Sketchfest, and I'm still smiling.

Here's the scene they closed with. It was filmed at UCB LA last year, and contains one of my favorite sketch lines ever.

I feel slightly weird telling people that I like The Killers. Maybe because so many vocal internet people don't. And I feel slightly weird for being affected by them.

Anyhoo. I really love the track "Spaceman" from their new record, mostly because of Brandon Flowers's voice in the softer moments. There's a vulnerability in his singing on this record that I'm not used to hearing, and it's striking.

And then there's the video. I have to give these guys a lot of credit for making a video this fricking weird for a major label release. They have more personality than other bands their size. Credit where it's due.

I don't remember seeing this video for Trisha Yearwood's "How Do I Live (Love Theme From Con Air)" at ALL when the movie came out (though I definitely saw Con Air in the theater), but there's something sublimely ridiculous about this sincere, pretty ballad, mixed with Nicolas Cage beating up dudes and running away from explosions.

Only matched of course, by my other favorite Love Theme From Giant Action Movie video, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Love Theme From Armageddon)" by Aerosmith. Tell me you don't get a little emotional when they tear down that curtain to reveal the spaceshuttle and a full orchestra. I mean COME ON!

My favorite discovery made while writing The Dump with the other Elephant Larry guys:

This song, Island Girl, is featured in Weekend At Bernie's II and it's played by an apparently famous Caribbean band called Burning Flames.

And here's another band. I think they're from Indonesia. Very different, and much younger. Their name? Burning Flame.

I love that these Indonesian punkers probably have NO IDEA that they share their name with a ridiculous calypso band from Weekend At Bernie's II. And God willing, they'll never find out. 'Cause I don't care how hard core you are. There's absolutely no way to own that.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Yankees acquiring Nick Swisher from a baseball perspective, but I certainly laughed at this video. Not so much the concept, which is fine, but some of the deliveries toward the end. He's no Eli Manning, but he'll do just fine.

My booth didn't break today, as it did for many others (Stefan, my brother, lots of people in NJ). I didn't have to fill out a paper ballot or even stand in line for very long. I was at a packed voting site, yet managed to get in at a point where the wait time was more than reasonable.

My only voting experience of note was that I stood in line behind a human raisin. She was around 90 years old, stood no taller than 4 foot six, wore a tight wrinkly down coat, and bounced a little from side to side when she advanced on the line.

Oh, and she had glasses. Raisins wear glasses, right?

Anyway, yeah. Human raisin. Quite adorable, and as it turns out, DELICIOUS.
