Dumb Comedy, Suits, Etc...

Missed this yesterday:

Guys Perpetually in Suits and Perpetually Silly? O.K.

It's interesting to see all the reactions to this first episode, particularly all the varied classifications it's been receiving (dumb, smart, non-sequitor, silly, sophisticated, etc...).

I actually like the show a lot, don't think it's "dumb" at all, and I'm pretty curious to see what happens.

what's a "single-camera series"? i'm guessing there's a specific technical definition beyond "a series which uses one camera." does anyone know some examples?

Nope, that's the definition. TV Shows are either 3 camera, or single-camera.

3 camera series - Traditional sitcom, shot with stage lighting, in front of an audience (usually), with three cameras, one on each side, one for front/close-ups. Also, usually shot on video.

1 camera series - ala scrubs, arrested development, shot on one camera, like a film. So set up lighting, frame shot, shoot, redo scene. No audience, usually shot on film or high-def video, takes a lot more time to shoot.

thanks alex, i knew you would know. :)

so, to recap, and with a little google-help:

single-camera: shows everyone likes like Six Feet Under, West Wing, Alias, CSI, 24, Sopranos

multi-camera: do they still make those? ;)

AWFUL.

Louis CK is making a three camera sitcom for HBO. Should be a winner.

Hey Jesse! You'll be excited to know that I downloaded your show to my ipod yesterday and feel asleep to your beautiful, soothing voice...plan on listening to the rest of the show soon...

I'm not saying your show is boring. It's just that your voice is so mellifluous that it gently guided me into dreamland.
