Totally Safe

Check out this dress that turns into a vending machine costume, used to help hide women if they are being followed at night by a rapist:

Totally safe, right? Unless, of course, you encounter a guy who only likes to rape vending machines.

It makes me wonder - do asians REALLY believe that's going to save them - or are we just painting Easterners in some ridiculous Western light?

Anyways, I'm off to eat a hot dog, drink some Coca-Cola and play some baseball.

From the NYTimes article:

These elaborate defenses are coming at a time when crime rates are actually declining in Japan. But the Japanese, sensitive to the slightest signs of social fraying, say they feel growing anxiety about safety, fanned by sensationalist news media. Instead of pepper spray, though, they are devising a variety of novel solutions, some high-tech, others quirky, but all reflecting a peculiarly Japanese sensibility.

Gotta find photos of these:

For children, she has a backpack that transforms into a Japanese-style fire hydrant, hiding the child. The “manhole bag” (a purse that can hide valuables by unfolding to look like a sewer cover. Lay it on the street with your wallet inside, and unwitting thieves are supposed to walk right by) was also her idea.

While I was watchig The Monkees last night, all I could think of was Peter, Davy, Mike and Mickey changing into the vending machines while hiding from the Evil Record Producer in a hair-brained scheme to hide the Evil Record Producer's hot niece. And the whole thing in my head is in fast motion and set to "Pleasant Valley Sunday".
