Elegy for the Bowery

This isn't particular funny or anything, but the Voice has a pretty cool article about The Bowery and how it's quickly becoming all luxurious and fancy-like. Watch out, 'cause here comes the link:

The Last Days of Loserville

Here's a fun fact: "...in 1845, residents between what is now Cooper Square and Union Square successfully petitioned to have the street's name changed from Bowery to Fourth Avenue to separate themselves from its shabby aura."

Also, if you're at all into NY history, check out Pete Hamill's new book, Downtown. His chapter on the Bowery is exceptionally interesting, and the book, at least for me, just clicked into place as "perfect subway reading." But then again, what do I know.
