Secret Jokes!

So I was listening to NPR's All Things Considered, and they had a story that they featured about AccuGen, this company that purports to be able to tell what sex your baby will be, five weeks into your pregnancy. The story was pretty interesting, because they claim to have a 99.9% accuracy rate...but won't reveal any of their survey results proving this...and there's a bunch of people who were told they have twins, or girls, or whatever, and it turned out not to be the case. All very interesting, you should learn about it at some other time. MY POINT BEING: at the very end of the story, they played the beginning notes of "Hey Baby" by Bruce Channel. For those not familiar, the lyrics go:

"Hey...hey baby...
I wanna know-whoa-whoa-whoa
Will you be my girl?"

Which is kind of a funny song to play after this AccuGen story. But it's only kinda funny if you know the song, and can place the lyrics quickly enough to make the connection between the song and the story. It's kind of a dick move in some ways. Haha! Here's a joke! SORT OF. On the other hand, it's a little like doing a crossword puzzle and figuring out connections.

But it also reminded me of one of the more oblique jokes/references I've ever seen. When you buy a new Apple Computer, and you boot it up for the first time, there's an opening animation that happens, and it's accompanied by a little burbling electronic song. Very cute. But since I have the CD, I realized that the song is "Eple" by Röyksopp, the Norwegian techno duo. "Eple" of course means apple in Norwegian. HA! Somebody must have thought this was very cute, and I do too - but it's such a hidden little joke, that most people won't EVER realize it's a joke at all. And I like that, because it feels like secret knowledge of some sort. Like, a little wink from the people at Apple.

Are things still jokes if they're mostly secrets?

Speaking of which, I'm looking forward to procuring Fiona Apple's new album.

Hm.

So if an hilarious tree falls in the middle of an hilarious forest, and there's no one there to laugh at it, is it still totally hilarious?

I say sure.
