The Staten Island Stapletons

Here's a fun football fact as we prepare for the Extra Large Super Bowl: Staten Island was once the home of a real-life, legitimate NFL football team.

Sure, they finished sixth, sixth, seventh and eighth in their four seasons on Earth. Sure, the most significant detail of their existence was that they changed their name from the "Stapletons" to the "Stapes." Sure, I can't even think of a third thing to say about them. The fact is they EXISTED. And isn't that enough sometimes?

Wow. A post about sports and Staten Island. I just effectively limited the audience of this post to my family.

Actually, more accurately, my father and brothers.

PS They're the 98th most significant event in Staten Island history! All right!

I liked this post, but the entire ELGB audience might have appreciated it more if there were 18 Billion Stapletons.

Have no fear Geoff, I enjoyed the trivia and will use it as proof that the SI Yankees are doomed to failure at the hands of the BK Cyclones...

Boooya.

Did they change their name to the "Stapes" as in an abbreviation of "Stapletons," or was it to represent a new mascot, the Stapes, a tiny, stirrup-shaped bone inside the ear? Now THAT'S football I would have watched! Well, not really, since I'm a actually a Cochlea fan. Sorry.

Dude, the Stapes would beat the Cochlea ANY day.

Though the Framingham Femurs always win it all anyway.

Are they playing the Shreveport Shins?
